A Semantic Characterization of Locative PPs

چکیده
The last two decades have seen remarkable development in compositional modeltheoretic semantics of natural language. The idea that natural language expressions can be directly interpreted in the model of discourse has gained significant support in various domains. It led to a better understanding of inference in linguistics with close relation to syntax, helped to characterize linguistically relevant classes of expressions, and revealed systematic constraints on their possible meanings. Quite independently of these developments, much work in the fields of cognitive and conceptual semantics has acquired a significant body of knowledge about the semantic behaviour of prepositional phrases (PPs). In the modeltheoretic framework, however, the semantics of PPs has remained, to a large extent, unexplored. Our aim in this paper is to contribute for bridging this gap. We refine and extend the proposal in Zwarts (1995), arguing for a vector space as the underlying ontology in the compositional analysis of locative PP structures. In section 2 we introduce a general semantic framework that uses such a model. Section 3 studies some denotational properties of prepositions in the proposed system. Certain properties introduced in Zwarts (1995) will be placed here in a wider perspective of preposition monotonicity. Two notions of monotonicity are defined and shown to be linguistically relevant in restricting the set of possible preposition denotations, accounting for central inferences and affecting grammaticality of modified PPs. An additional constraint, similar to the conservativity restriction on determiners, is shown to hold of natural language locative prepositions. Throughout this paper, we presuppose familiarity with basic Linear Algebra and simple notions from Topology.1 Some useful definitions are summarized in an appendix.

Syntax-semantics mapping of locative arguments
This paper proposes a syntax-semantics correspondence of locative expressions: This proposal is based on the syntactic hierarchy among three locative structures (PPs, VPs, and verbal affixes) and the semantic hierarchy among four locative arguments (Goal, Source, Symmetric Path, Stative Location). As for the syntactic hierarchy, the verbal affixes are closer to the head verb than the locative/p...

Prepositional phrases (PPs) are both common and semantically varied in open English text. Learning the semantics of prepositions is not a trivial task in general. It may seem that the semantics of a given PP can be predicted with reasonable reliability independent of its context. However, it is actually common for prepositions or even identical PPs to exhibit a wide range of semantic fuctions i...
متن کاملGerman Particle Verbs And Pleonastic Prepositions
This paper discusses the behaviour of German particle verbs formed by two-way prepositions in combination with pleonastic PPs including the verb particle as a preposition. These particle verbs have a characteristic feature: some of them license directional prepositional phrases in the accusative, some only allow for locative PPs in the dative, and some particle verbs can occur with PPs in the a...
متن کاملThe aspectual impact of French locative goal PPs
In recent years, a number of analyses have been proposed to account for the contrast in (1) (e.g. (Tenny 1992), (Verkuyl 1993), (Krifka 1995), (Jackendo 1996)). Although they di er in theoretical background and technical detail, most of these analyses share the basic intuition that the telicity properties of sentences in (1) derive from the boundedness properties of the path the theme is descri...
متن کاملProsodically Constrained Postverbal PPs in Mandarin
This paper discusses postverbal PPs in Mandarin Chinese and proposes that the constraints on postverbal PPs are not syntactic per se, but prosodic in character. It is shown that the NSR (Nuclear Stress Rule), formulated in terms of government, is responsible for the grammaticality of postverbal PPs in Mandarin Chinese. Introduction Postverbal PPs in Mandarin have been investigated by Chao (1968...
